Apostrophes have 2 functions: to indicate possession and form contractions.

  1. Possession:
  • Use 's after a singular noun to show that something belongs to someone or something.
  • Use 's after a singular noun ending in -s, or use just ' (apostrophe) after a singular noun ending in -s when it sounds better.
  • Use 's after the last noun in a group to show joint possession.
  • Use 's to indicate time or duration.
  1. Contractions:
  • Apostrophes are used in contractions to show where letters have been omitted. Example: don't (do not).
